Dear colleagues,

The Institute of Archaeology of Russian Academy of Sciences invites you to take part in the scientific conference "Architectural archaeology – 2019", which will be held on December 4–5th, 2019 (Wednesday – Thursday) in Moscow at Institute of Archaeology at
19, Dmitry Ulyanov street (conference hall on the 3rd floor).

The organizers of the conference propose to discuss a wide range of issues related to the study of architecture – first of all, to the architectural archaeology as a discipline that studies man-made structures covered with the ground, but also wider – to the architectural archaeology as the science of architectural antiquities. One of the main features of architectural archaeology is the focus of researchers on a large ‘artifact’: stone, brick, wood or wood-earth construction. In the process of studying archaeologists tend to explore, to preserve this building, but the study of ‘demolition’ is also not excluded from the architectural archaeology – it is possible in the case when other, not less important and more ancient objects are found below the construction. Chronologically, the architectural archaeology traditionally covers the period from Antiquity to Modern Age. Russian architectural archaeology includes ancient Greek, Hellenistic and Roman monuments of the Black Sea and Azov Sea, Byzantine monuments, burial mounds of Scythian time and the Migration Period, medieval monuments of the Christian and Muslim world, monuments of Ancient Russia and the Moscow state, some buildings of Modern Age.

Expanding the chronology of the conference topics, the organizers would like to include the issues of protoarchitecture – various aspects of the study of structures, including non-written epochs, structures indicating the appearance of spatial man-made structures and their prototypes: mounds, shelters, dolmens and other megaliths. It is assumed that the topic of ‘protoarchitectural archaeology’ will touch upon the specific character of their spatial organization and architecture-like forms.

The following topics are proposed to be considered as the main ones:
- results of new architectural and archaeological research and meaning of open objects;
- a new interpretation of already excavated monuments;
- various methods of archaeological study of architectural objects and their documenting;
- experience of exhibiting and museum presentation of the studied objects;
- theoretical summarizing of the materials of architectural and archaeological research;
- issues of disciplines related to the architectural archaeology: Philology, Art History, Materials Science and others.

In general, the conference is meant to gather research related to architectural antiquities studied around the world on one scientific platform. Articles based on the reports are expected to be published in the annual periodical named "Architectural archaeology".
