 The Roman Period Cemetery of Frontovoe 3: The Barbarians on the Borders of the Empire

Simferopol, 6–8 April 2022

The studies of various aspects of the history and archaeology of the Northern Black Sea Area in the Roman and Early Byzantine Periods are among the most important areas of fundamental researches carried out by the experts of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), Institute of Archaeology of the Crimea of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Simferopol), and the History and Archaeology of the Crimea Research Centre at the V. I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University (Simferopol). In recent years, there was a number of researches at unique archaeological sites dated to the Roman and Early Medieval Periods, supplying the results very important for the understanding of historical processes in the Crimea and in many other regions of Europe.

Large-scale archaeological researches at the Taurida Highway conducted by the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences supplied the scholarship with extensive new materials from the cemeteries and settlements. Among these sites was the cemetery of Frontovoe 3 (located in the Nakhimovskii district of present-day Sevastopol) of unique preservation, dating from the late first to the first decades of the fifth century AD. Now a team of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences explores the materials of the mentioned cemetery within the project supported by the Russian Science Foundation, no. 20-18-00396 «The Barbarians and Romans in the South-Western Crimea: Interaction of Cultures».

As a part of this project, the International Scholarly Conference «The Roman Period Cemetery of Frontovoe 3: The Barbarians on the Borders of the Empire» will take place on April 6–8, 2022 in Simferopol. This conference is initiated by the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology of the Crimea of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the History and Archaeology of the Crimea Research Centre of the V. I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University.

The main task of the conference was, first, to make the archaeological audience familiar with the results of researches on the materials from the cemetery of Frontovoe 3 and, second, to discuss these results within the comparative analysis with synchronous sites in the Crimea and to analyse the aspects and disputable questions in the studies in the antiquities of the Pontus-Danube Area and the Mediterranean in the Roman and the Great Migration Periods.

The planned format of the event is hybrid (Skype conference and offline presentations)
