Korol, G.G. & Naumova, O.B.
Artistic Metal among Nomads of Central Asia in the 1st–2nd mill. AD. Moscow: IA RAS, 2017. 128 pp.: il.

In the book Dr. Galina Korol and Dr. Olga Naumova produce results of their studies of the non-ferrous metal decorated ornaments. Mainly belt ornaments of medieval warrior-horsemen are under consideration, those from cultures of the Sayan-Altai region are the most numerous and elaborated in their decoration. Describing artistic metal items, the authors pay attention to technological traditions and quality of manufacturing, as well as to the structure of the decor and the semantics of images.
Basing themselves on decorative and applied arts, the authors address the problem of cultural interaction and influence in Sayan-Altai and adjacent territories. The predominant cultural impact was derived from the south-south-west: from East Turkestan, the territory of modern China; Central Asia, Iran. Significant influence came from the southeast (China), which is evident from other items as well. Contacts of the Sayan-Altai region with distant territories (Mongolia, the south of the Russian Far East, Tibet) are also revealed.
Who provided nomads with decorated ornaments made from a non-ferrous metal? Possible models of medieval non-ferrous metalwork organisation in Central Asia and neighbouring territories are suggested. The ethnographic data regarding organisation and technology of metalwork of the South Siberian and Central Asian nomadic peoples gave ground to raise the question whether it had been possible to organise manufacturing of metal decorated toreutics items (i.e. belt ornaments, etc.) among medieval nomads.
The book is well illustrated with archaeological materials from Russian and Central Asian museums, as well as with ethnographic archival photos from museums and the collection of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow).
