Education: Studied in Tula State Pedagogical University, Faculty of History (1970); completed his postgraduate course at the Institute of Archaeology of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1976).
Mentor: V.D. Blavatsky.
PhD: Population of the Bosporan State in the 6th –2nd centuries BC (1977). Academic Supervisor V.D. Blavatsky.
Doctoral Thesis (The Higher Doctorate): Rural area of the European Bosporus in antiquity (a settlement system and ethnicity of the population) (1993).
Key research interests: History and archaeology of the ancient Black Sea and Mediterranean; Rural area of the Bosporan Kingdom.
Other Professional Activities: Editor-in-chief of the yearbook "Antiquities of the Bosporus" (since 1998).
Archaeological Field Excavations in the Crimea, North Caucasus, Taman, as well as Moldova and Ukraine; Head of the East Crimean expedition (since 1975).
