Bio

Education: Studied at the Department of Russian History in Dagestan State University, Faculty of History (1972); completed a postgraduate course at the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Archaeology of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1977).

Mentors: V.P. Lyubin, A.N. Rogachev.

PhD: The Upper Palaeolithic of the North Caucasus and its relation to the upper Palaeolithic of adjacent areas (1977). Academic Supervisor V.P. Lyubin.

Doctoral Thesis (The Higher Doctorate): Palaeolithic of Southern Arabia (1989).

Key research interests: Stone Age of South-West Asia; Upper Palaeolithic of Eastern Europe; Ethnoarchaeology; Linguoarchaeology.

Other Professional Activities: Deputy Academician-Secretary of the Department of History and Philology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 2008); Director of the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Dagestan Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 2009); Chairman of the Dagestan Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2009–2015); member of the Upper Palaeolithic Commission of The International Union for Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences (IUPPS) (since 1996); Honoured Scientist of the Republic of Dagestan (1999).

Archaeological Field Excavations in different regions of Russia, as well as the Soviet-Yemeni Joint Expedition (later the Russian Expedition in Yemen); Head of the Zaraisk (since 1995) and North Caucasian (since 2003) expeditions.
