The Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences,
together with the Novgorod State United Museum,
and with the participation of the State Vladimir Suzdal Museum,
plans to hold a scientific conference with the title "Architectural Archaeology: the Material World of Ancient Monuments"
in Veliky Novgorod on April 25–27, 2023.

The conference is designed to bring together researchers from different countries, engaged in the architectural archaeology, a discipline that explores man-made structures completely or partially hidden underground, and, in general, in the science of architectural antiquities.

The priority in 2023 will be the archaeometry of architectural monuments and the material world of the Middle Ages as a whole. This will allow us to address a wide range of problems related to the study and restoration of not only architectural structures and building materials, but also art and craft objects of various materials (archaeological finds and exhibits in museum collections).

A session of the conference will be devoted to the study of frescoes and church paintings in the monuments of the Middle Ages and Modern times: the study of wall-paintings in situ and fresco fragments.

The papers presented at the conference will be published in the annual periodical collection "Architectural Archaeology".

The conference is being held within the state assignment of Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation (theme “Pre-Mongol frescoes in Novgorod: archaeological context and scientific research: The frescoes of St. George’s Cathedral, Yuriev monastery from the 2013/2020 excavations”), agreement № 075-15-2021-576.
With the financial support of the Istoriya Otechestva Foundation.
